THE GUIDE

Best photo practices for your application.

A rejected photo can delay your entire application. Nearly every rejection comes down to a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here's how to get it right the first time.

01

Take the photo like it's a passport photo, because it is

Nusuk treats your personal photo as a biometric document. Think official passport photo, not profile picture. Stand facing the camera directly, keep your head straight, keep both eyes open, and hold a neutral expression with your mouth closed. Your face, from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead, should be fully visible and fill most of the frame.

  • Face the camera straight on, head level, shoulders square
  • Neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed
  • Full face visible, with nothing covering your chin, cheeks, or forehead
  • Use a recent photo that looks like you today (no more than 6 months old)

02

Get the lighting right: clear and bright

Blurry, dark, or shadowy photos are one of the top rejection reasons. Stand facing a window or a soft light source so your face is evenly lit. Avoid harsh overhead lights and direct sunlight. Both create shadows on your face and behind your head.

  • Face the light source so your face is evenly lit
  • Ask someone to take the photo, or use a timer and hold the phone steady
  • No shadows on your face or on the wall behind you
  • No overexposed, washed out, or heavily filtered photos

03

Use a white background (or let us fix it)

The background must be plain white, with no patterns, no furniture, no scenery. A plain white wall works perfectly. If you don't have one, don't worry: our tool's white background feature automatically removes your background and replaces it with clean white.

  • Stand in front of a plain, light colored wall
  • Leave a little space between you and the wall to avoid shadows
  • Not a party selfie: no other people, drinks, or event backgrounds
  • Not a garden photo shoot: no trees, flowers, or outdoor scenery
  • No group photos cropped down to just you

04

Dress code, glasses, and head coverings

Wear formal or modest attire. A collared shirt or equivalent works well (avoid turtle necks and sleeveless tops). Religious head coverings such as a hijab are allowed, but your full face must remain visible with no fabric or hair covering any part of it from forehead to chin. Saudi guidance asks applicants to remove glasses, as they can interfere with biometric matching.

  • Formal or modest clothing
  • Hijab or religious head covering is fine, as long as your full face is visible
  • No glasses. Remove them for the photo to be safe
  • No hats or caps, and no hair falling across your face

05

The passport page photo

Community reports consistently show the passport upload is the number one cause of application rejections, usually because of glare, cut off edges, or unreadable text. Photograph the main biodata page (the page with your photo and personal details) flat, straight on, and in good light.

  • Every piece of text must be readable: name, passport number, dates
  • The machine readable zone (the two lines of characters at the bottom) must be fully visible
  • Lay the passport flat and shoot from directly above
  • No blur. Hold steady and tap to focus before shooting
  • No glare from the laminate. Angle away from light sources or turn off flash
  • No cut edges. Capture the entire page with all four corners visible
  • No fingers covering any part of the page

06

Quick checklist before you upload

  • Clear and bright, in focus
  • Full face visible, facing the camera, neutral expression
  • White or plain light background (or use our background tool)
  • Formal attire; head covering OK with face fully visible; no glasses
  • Taken within the last 6 months
  • Passport page: flat, straight, no glare, all text readable
